Our VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) program is a state-funded initiative designed to prepare four-year-old children for kindergarten by focusing on early literacy, language, and foundational math skills. At our school, VPK contracted hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with wraparound care available Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Children must be four years old by September 1 to qualify. Our program blends the academic goals of VPK with the warmth, creativity, and child-led discovery that define our unique teaching approach.
In our VPK classroom, children build essential skills across all developmental domains: early reading and writing, problem-solving, number sense, scientific thinking, and social-emotional growth. Our teachers provide a blend of small-group instruction, whole-group experiences, and individualized support to ensure each child is progressing in a way that meets their needs. Through meaningful conversations, hands-on exploration, and thoughtful reflection, children develop the confidence and readiness they need for kindergarten and beyond.
While we meet all state standards for VPK, our approach is deeply rooted in Reggio-inspired, play-based learning. This means children engage with carefully prepared environments, open-ended materials, and intentional provocations that spark curiosity and inquiry. Our classroom offers a structured rhythm to the day, including time for group meetings, project work, independent play, and outdoor exploration. Within that structure, children are given voice and choice—encouraged to think critically, collaborate with peers, and express their ideas in creative, meaningful ways. We believe this balanced approach nurtures not only school readiness, but a lifelong love of learning.
